Correspondence of E.A. Burke discusses Louisiana politics and affairs in Honduras and Mexico. Included are letters to General Don Santos Guardiola, president of Honduras (1859); to Burke from William P. Kellogg concerning voting in Louisiana (1874); to Burke from Jefferson Davis recommending a newspaper editor, Bartley (1883); from J.W. Nicholson, Louisiana State University President (1884). Additional letters are from C.J. Barrow, State Commissioner of the World's Industrial and Cotton Centennial regarding the exposition (1884); from Porfirio Diaz, president of Mexico; and from Policarpo Bonilla, president of Honduras (1892-1894). Some letters reflect Burke's interest in the proposed "Central American Union" between Central American states and Mexico (1897-1899). The collection contains a slave bill of sale from Arkansas (1859); typewritten English translations of extracts from Spanish documents and clippings, including items on the colonization of emancipated slaves in Central America (1862); a list of people who voted for Kellogg (1877); bonds of the State of Louisiana signed by E.A. Burke (1880); invitations; a deed; certificates granting leave to Burke (1885-1886); and a typewritten copy of a pact between Honduras, Nicaragua, and Salvador called the "Greater Republic of Central America" (1898). Four photographs are included; one depicts Policarpo Bonilla. Printed items include a fragment of the Santa Barbara newspaper LA VERDAD (1898).
